TOUR TIPS

Timing – start 4 months out. all the research and back & forth emails takes a lot of time.

Booking – go where you know people; be business-like, direct, to the point; try to reserve a date first with the venue, then recruit other local bands to be on the bill;  call friends and ask what bands they know in the area; have a “one sheet” that includes bio, photo, what your music sounds like, venues you’ve played in your town; be honest about your draw.

Gig details - have a checklist with questions to ask the venue, like: pay, parking, load in time, door person, PA availability, etc.; call 1 week before to ensure gig is still on; make a tour notebook that has 1 page per gig with all details, including directions, phone numbers

Promotion - visit local radio stations where you go, do ticket giveaways on the air, play open mics (good for Monday & Tuesday), busk on the sidewalk, send flyers to venues and your friends to post, look up local publications, bloggers, don’t book 2 gigs in the same town

Health on the road - get some alone time, exercise (run, throw frisbee, do pushups at gas stops), shop at grocery stores, avoid fast food, keep drinking alcohol to a minimum

Other - make sure people sign email list, thank people immediately by email for signing mailing list and send them recent updates they missed, hang out by your merch table after you play
keep receipts from tour for taxes, stay on couches, camp – you won’t make money if you’re paying for hotels

ADVICE

FROM SONGWRITERS TO SONGWRITERS:

01. Hustle your music like a crack dealer.
02. Surround yourself with what inspires you.
03. Don’t give up, don’t stop trying. The best way to fail is to stop trying.
04. Everyone has their own vision. Don’t worry about what others are doing.
05. Bring your hard drive to your recording sessions. Own your stuff!
06. have the musicians who record with you sign a Performance Release,
so publishing is easier when the opportunity comes along.
07. Be a 1-Stop-Shop for publishers: have 3 copies of the final masters -
one of everything, one instrumental (no vocals), one only vocals.
08. Look to your community for support.
09. Read music business books & Ezines
10. Find a mentor, learn from people who are better than you.
11. Have a great website and make awesome videos.
12. Share bills with different artists, so you get exposed to a new audience every show.
13. Keep your sense of humor.
14. Practice your instruments daily. Hone your craft.
15. Have fun!
